Our Community

At Thomson Wilson, we are proud to be a Northland business and passionate about supporting our community.

We support our community in several ways

Examples are providing pro bono legal advice, making donations and sponsorships, contributing our skills to professional organisations, and actively getting involved in local groups and clubs.

1. Pro bono legal advice

We provide legal advice for free or at substantially reduced rates to numerous charitable causes and community organisations.

2. Sponsorship and donations

Thomson Wilson makes financial donations every year to individuals and non-profit organisations in the community who are in need, whose charitable purposes align with our values, or who we simply want to give a hand. Our lawyers and staff also pitch in every year to make a donation to the Salvation Army Christmas food appeal.

3. Rolling our sleeves up

Our partners and staff are involved in a wide range of local groups, clubs, schools and events.  They often contribute as committee members, using their unique skills to help these groups make good decisions and benefit the community.

A few examples of how we like to help...

North Haven Hospice

North Haven Hospice provides specialist palliative care to people with life-limiting illnesses, as well as offering care and support for the family and whanau. As an "angel sponsor" of the 2013, 2014 and 2015 North Haven Hospice Charity Auctions, Thomson Wilson has been able to lend a hand with fundraising for this great organisation.

Citizens Advice Bureau

Citizens Advice Bureaus throughout New Zealand have a long history of providing valuable assistance and services to communities on a not-for-profit basis. Several of our lawyers volunteer their time at the Whangarei Citizens Advice Bureau, in a collaborative effort with lawyers from other local firms.

Community Sport

We believe sport is a great way to engage young people, unite communities, foster life skills and develop talent.  Many of our partners and staff are (or have been) talented sportspeople and it is no coincidence that we support sport in several ways. Peter Magee (a partner of our firm) is a trustee of Sport Northland and serves on the judicial committee of the Northland Rugby Union. Other partners and staff volunteer their time to coach and referee local sports, including soccer, cricket and squash. We also provide pro bono legal advice to numerous community sport organisations.

Northland Cricket Association Inc and New Zealand Cricket

Graeme Mathias, one of our partners, is the honorary legal advisor to Northland Cricket Association, which administers cricket in the area from Warkworth to Kaitaia.  Helping this organisation is a great way to support the development of cricket at grass-roots level. Graeme also serves as a New Zealand Cricket Code of Conduct Commissioner.

Angel Flight NZ

We are proud to support Angel Flight NZ, a charity which co-ordinates non-emergency flights for medical purposes.  Angel Flight assists people who are financially disadvantaged with a medical conditions and long-distances to travel, by flying them to airports near their medical treatment facilities. We prepared legal documentation to help set up Angel Flight, and have provided further pro bono legal advice as required.

Project Promise – Northland Community Foundation

The Northland Community Foundation led "Project Promise", a major fundraising appeal to raise funds for the building of a new cancer treatment centre for Northland.  This was an amazing community effort, with our firm being just one of a large number of supporters and donors.  Thomson Wilson’s donation of a framed limited-edition Sir Edmund Hillary ice-axe as a fundraising auction prize helped to raise funds towards the appeal.
